Bringing new life to old furniture
I’ve always been a fan of thrifting, however facebook marketplace is a whole other world! It’s all the thrills of thrifting, but you don’t have to put on pants! I’m also a really big fan of not having to leave my house. Over the last few years I’ve slowly been furnishing our home with facebook marketplace finds. It has a different feeling bringing something “found” into your home, not to mention the amount of money saved. I used to work for a corporate furniture company & not only does furniture have one of the highest mark ups out there, it also loses value the moment it leaves the “showroom floor”.
The best thing about older furniture is that it was built to last, so I’m sharing a few of my finds to hopefully inspire you to breathe new life into forgotten furniture.
Henredon Chairs
If you’re familiar with the quality of Henredon, these were a steal at $175 for BOTH.
World Market Paige Dining Chairs
Retail price on these beauties is $459.98 for a set of 2. I found a set of 6 for $450 total! I was even more excited for the black wood version of the Paige dining chair, as it was discontinued a while ago.
Rob’s Whiskey Chair
An Aurelle Home chair that retails at $2,168.99. Found for $150.
Arhaus Dining Table
Not only was this another steal, retailing at over $2,000… it also came with a FREE 10×14 rug AND 6 Restoration hardware chairs for a total of $500. I’ll include a photo of those next, but here’s the Arhaus table!
Restoration Hardware Chairs & Safavieh Rug
These were the free items I mentioned before when I went to buy the Arhaus table. A gorgeous & huge Safavieh rug and 6, yes i repeat 6 RESTORATION HARDWARE Vintage French Camelback side chairs. WHAT?! The chairs alone retail at $580 a piece… for a single chair!
Handmade Wesley Hall Wingback Chair Signed by all 4 Creators
This one was crazy. I’ve always hunted for a plaid chair because, let’s face it, I love anything plaid. When I stumbled upon this beauty for $25 dollars I knew it would always have a home with me! Finding out the maker and the signatures was just an added bonus! These chairs retail in the same category as Henredon.
Vintage Ornate Mirror
This one was kind of a unicorn for me. I had a specific size in mind and had various online carts filled with ornate mirrors at an outrageous price that I could never bring myself to spend, so I was determined to stick it out and find “the one”. Then this beauty popped up. $100 dollars and it came with 2 smaller ones too. I’ve never moved so quickly in my life. Here she is in her new forever home!
Hooker Desk & Executive chair
If you know that name in furniture, you know not only is it very expensive, it is very, very heavy. Built to last for sure. We scored that desk & it’s executive chair to match for a whopping $375. The desk itself retails at $2859, and the chair at $1679. WHAT?!
Table Lamps
Unlike the pricey, $500 price tag on oversized organic table lamps you would see at One Kings Lane, Mcgee & Co, or other luxury retailers, I scored a pair of these for $20 bucks!
Facebook Marketplace Tips & Tricks
Search
Facebook marketplace works off of an algorithm. The more you search for the specific items you are looking for, the more FB will push those items to the top of your feed. I usually get on there at least once a day and just search for “Gold ornate mirror” or “wingback chair”. I’m currently on the hunt for 1 large dining hutch or even 2 smaller ones, so I keep those keywords active in my searches & get dozens of options popping up at the top of my feed everyday!
Save
Saving posts of those “almost what you’re looking for” items will also help the algorithm help you! I keep an entire folder of saved items to not only watch that specific item in case it drops in price but to have working with my algorithm.
Patience
I did not find these deals overnight, nor did I furnish my entire home in the blink of an eye, I hunted & hunted & hunted. & I still have a ways to go but I am slowly filling my home with things I actually love rather than “need it now” impulse buys. It’s a process, but I promise you it’s so rewarding & the money saved is a gift in itself!
Moral of the story
This post is meant to inspire you to see the beauty in the forgotten furniture, reuse, repurpose, and save money. All of these items I found may have that original pretty price tag, but remember they are not even close to worth that amount after they’ve left the “showroom” so to speak. I chose most of these items based on quality of what I was looking for in my home and the way they made me feel. I wanted character in my home, furniture that would last, and furniture that was also beautiful.
