When in doubt, paint it black!

I am so excited to share my black fireplace makeover with you! As you guys know by now, I’m no stranger to painting, and especially no stranger to painting things black! It’s one of my favorite ways to not only add a dramatic touch to a room but also a luxurious one. From the moment I stepped foot in my new home I knew one thing was for certain, BLACK was happening everywhere.

"Ashley

The Decision

I must admit painting the fireplace seemed like a daunting task and even I questioned my decision of going with black. The fireplace itself is gorgeous and I even enjoyed the warm rustic tones of the stones wondering why I needed to be painting it in the first place, however, at the end of the day it just didn’t feel like “me”. Most of my decisions in my last home were for resale or made with the next buyer in mind and what they would want to see. As for this home, I want to fully embrace my design style and the things I truly enjoy within my home. Home is your most personal space & should truly reflect you, your family, and the things you truly enjoy, whether it’s an eclectic display of things collected from travels, family photos displayed along a gallery wall, a farmhouse kitchen, or a rustic retreat in the middle of the city. It’s you. Your space. Filled with all the things important to you, a place to retreat, & a place to enjoy the things you love.

Before I Started

"Ashley

Here is my original living room. The paint color was so dark, making this room feel like a cave, so before I moved in I had the entire house painted Precious Pearls by Dunn Edwards which made everything 1,000 times better to begin with.

The Wallpaper

I started my fireplace makeover by adding a peel and stick wallpaper to the top. Peel & stick wallpaper is hands down my favorite thing to install, it’s such an easy process & can completely transform a space without damaging the walls. Had I known about this in my apartment days I would have saved myself the pain of painting so many walls back to white before I moved out! Since the fireplace is rounded, I can’t hang or decorate it as you would a normal flat faced fireplace. Wallpaper was really my only option as far as adding some texture & depth to the space. You can find the same wallpaper here.

Prep & Painting

Now it was up to me to tackle the rest of my painting list. I began with vacuuming & dusting every nook & cranny of that bad boy. Prep is one of the most important steps to any painting project & taking the extra time beforehand will always save you time in the long run. Trust me, I’ve learned this the hard way. Next comes the taping. I cannot stress enough how important taping is if you have anything around the surface you are painting that you don’t want to get ruined (floors, wallpaper, etc). Normally I hand paint surfaces so taping isn’t necessary however it is 100% necessary when using a paint sprayer. 1 word-overspray, it’s a real deal, so take the time and tape everything off. I promise you this will be the most time-consuming part of your entire project. It’s a cake walk after that.

Next, I got out my Wagner Flexio 2000 Paint Sprayer that I bought that day, at what seems like my second home lately, Home Depot. I must say it was super easy to assemble, use, & clean. In the past I had only used a more industrial paint sprayer on painting the exterior of my home, so this was a totally different experience and definitely a very easy process. All I had to do was fill that bad boy up with the paint I chose (Satin Black by Behr) and was ready to roll.

Love At First Spray

Here goes nothing! I fired that bad boy up, closed my eyes, and prayed for the best. JK I didn’t actually close my eyes but I did have to get out my safety glasses. As I mentioned before, overspray is no joke. The tiniest paint particles will get in your eyes so make sure to wear those! Safety first!

"Ashley

I didn’t get far before I was already obsessed.

"Ashley

Happily Ever After

I had officially fallen in love. The process was so seamless, I barely even picked the sprayer up before I was finished! It seriously didn’t take longer than 15 minutes. Like I said before, the prep work is what takes the longest! I had seen my fair share of gorgeous white fireplace makeovers and a handful of gorgeous black fireplace makeovers and I must say the black is extremely underrated, maybe a little bit scary at first, but overall the most dramatic of them all. I also feel like it can go with any decor style you throw at it while standing the test of time. So don’t be afraid to go bold if that’s what you love!

Updated look

As I’ve settled in and started adding more color to the walls along with decor, I am still absolutely in love with the black paint. Here’s an updated look as to what it looks like today!
